Woodchester- Elmore
Upright Piano
Built in Stroud, Gloucestershire, the Elmore was produced by Woodchester Piano Co., a small British maker active from the mid 1990s until the early 2000s.

Woodchester was established with a clear purpose. At a time when much of British piano manufacture had already shifted away from domestic production, the company chose to continue building upright pianos in England using traditional methods, skilled handwork, and carefully considered design. Their intention was not to pursue volume or short-term fashion but to produce instruments governed by musical outcome and structural longevity.

That philosophy is evident in the Elmore’s construction. The frame is cast in premier iron, providing the strength necessary for excellent tuning stability and controlled energy transfer. The rear structure is formed from solid quarter-sawn beech bracing, creating a very rigid backbone to support the structure. String termination is managed through agraffes across every note, ensuring accurate bearing and consistent speaking length from the bass, right through to the treble. The cabinet itself is formed from solid timber rather than composite panels, aligning the external casework with the instrument’s structural integrity. The keyboard and action components were specified with durability and repeatable control in mind, contributing to an even and reliable touch.

Design decisions were made with restraint, and materials were chosen for their suitability rather than convenience. As a result, Woodchester pianos were built in limited numbers, and this gave their instruments a sense of integrity that was already becoming uncommon by the time the Elmore was introduced.

In 1997, the Elmore was awarded Upright Piano of the Year by the Music Industries Association, an independently judged recognition that marked the instrument’s standing within the industry at the time.

The piano offered here is a late example and reflects Woodchester’s design language at its most settled. By this stage, their structural and tonal intentions were clearly defined, even as wider economic pressures continued to reshape British piano manufacturing.

The cabinet is finished in knotty pine, a deliberate and relatively uncommon choice. While Woodchester did offer this finish within their 'country range', it was produced in far smaller numbers than their mahogany variants. Natural figuring and knots are left visible and carefully balanced across the casework, allowing the character of the timber to remain part of the instrument rather than something to be concealed. The result is a cabinet shaped by material honesty rather than ornament.

Prepared in our workshop, this Elmore has been approached with respect for the original maker’s intent and with close attention to its internal geometry and mechanical relationships. Beyond routine regulation, the action has been carefully surveyed so that relationships which govern response and expressive capacity all sit within optimal tolerances, allowing the mechanism to function with balanced control and freedom across the compass. Voicing has been refined to preserve coherence between registers and to respect the piano’s original tonal character, allowing clarity and warmth to emerge without exaggeration.

As with all pianos offered by Sykes & Sons Pianos, the Elmore is supplied complete with a brand new adjustable stool, free UK delivery, and our comprehensive guarantee, ensuring confidence in the instrument and peace of mind for the next custodian of this rare piece of British craftsmanship from the closing chapter of piano manufacturing in the Stroud Valley.
