Sykes & Sons is first and foremost a working piano workshop.
Our days are divided between restoration, preparation, technical work, and private appointments, much of which requires uninterrupted time at the bench.

Telephone conversations are therefore arranged in advance. Knowing a little about your enquiry beforehand also allows us to consider it properly, so that when we speak, we can give you our full attention and the time your enquiry deserves.

Viewing By Appointment

A considered, private approach to choosing a piano.

A visit to Sykes & Sons begins before you arrive.
Every appointment is prepared individually, beginning with a conversation about the pianist and the kind of instrument being sought.

Initial Consultation: Once we have received your enquiry, we will arrange a brief telephone consultation to discuss playing experience, the setting in which the piano will be used, budget, and any preferences in size, style, touch, or tone.
Selecting the Right Pianos: You do not need to know precisely what you are looking for.
Whether you are choosing a first piano or have played for a lifetime, we use that conversation to identify the instruments within our collection most likely to suit you.
Honest Guidance: Our recommendations are guided by the requirements you give us, including your budget.
If we believe our current collection contains something genuinely suitable, we will prepare the most relevant instruments for your visit. If it does not, we will tell you. We would rather recommend no appointment at all than encourage you towards the wrong piano.
A Private Appointment: We welcome only one appointment at a time, giving you the freedom to play and compare the instruments properly, ask questions, and form your own impressions without another viewing taking place around you.

There is no expectation to make a decision on the day. Your appointment is simply an opportunity to consider the right instruments properly, with the time, privacy, and informed guidance to do so at your own pace.
