Chappell - Model B

Upright Piano

Chappell & Co., founded in London in 1811, became one of the most recognised names in English piano manufacture. Over the course of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the company established a reputation for instruments that combined refined musical character with dependable construction, supplying pianos to homes, teaching studios, and institutions throughout Britain and across the wider musical world.

Chappell remains a name we are always pleased to encounter in the workshop. Their instruments reflect the qualities we value most in traditional English piano making: thoughtful design, structural integrity, and a tonal character defined by warmth, clarity, and musical balance.

The Model B reflects this philosophy particularly well. Conceived as a capable domestic upright, it offers a thoughtful balance between musical capacity and practical proportions. A rigid back structure and cast iron frame provide the foundation for tuning stability, while the scale design supports an even tonal character across the keyboard with warmth and coherence throughout the registers.

When properly prepared, the Model B demonstrates the qualities that made English uprights of this period so widely appreciated.

The piano offered here is a well-preserved example of the model and reflects the restrained design language typical of Chappell’s mid-century instruments. The cabinet proportions are elegant and understated, allowing the piano to sit comfortably within a wide variety of interiors while maintaining the quiet confidence characteristic of English upright casework.

This instrument has spent the majority of its life in a single private home, where it was cherished as the family piano for many years. Over time it quietly accompanied children growing into adulthood and, in due course, the next generation discovering the instrument for themselves. When it eventually arrived at our workshop, the family’s request was a simple one: that the piano be carefully prepared so it might continue to provide dependable musical service for many years to come.

In our workshop, the mechanical relationships that govern the responsiveness and tactile character of the action have been carefully restored and refined, ensuring the instrument delivers a dependable, responsive, and consistent quality of touch.

Voicing has been approached with the same faithfulness to Chappell’s original intentions, allowing warmth and colour to develop with the rich sustain and clarity. Together, these refinements allow the instrument’s touch and tone to sit in natural balance, revealing the musical character for which the model is known.

The cabinet has been sympathetically refinished to enhance the natural beauty of the piano’s solid mahogany casework, a material choice that speaks to the quality of the instrument’s construction. A carefully blended oil finish provides a durable, microporous surface that allows the timber to continue to breathe naturally while enriching the grain, bringing renewed depth and warmth to the wood and allowing its character to come fully into view.

After careful preparation and servicing in our workshop, this Chappell Model B once again offers the balanced touch and musical warmth for which these Chappell uprights have long been favoured. As with all our pianos, it is supplied complete with a brand new adjustable stool, free UK delivery, and the Sykes & Sons Guarantee.
